Governor inductions

Every new governor and trustee should work through an onboarding checklist — read the scheme of delegation, sign the code of conduct, meet the chair, attend a board observation. This register tracks each induction pack against the named governor.

The default checklist

When you create a new induction record, the items default to the National Governance Association’s recommended trustee induction checklist. That covers:

  • Read the trust constitution / articles of association.
  • Sign the trustee code of conduct.
  • Submit declaration of interest.
  • Read trust safeguarding policy and KCSIE Part 1.
  • Read the Academies Trust Handbook (Finance section).
  • Read the scheme of delegation / terms of reference.
  • Meeting with the chair of trustees and with the clerk to trustees.
  • Visit at least one academy in the trust (optional).
  • Complete safeguarding training.
  • Complete data protection / GDPR training.
  • Complete finance / pay-band training (optional).

You can override the list per-induction if the trust has additional items (e.g. multi-academy specifics).

Workflow

  1. New governor appointed. Clerk creates an induction row referencing the people-register entry.
  2. The row shows the checklist with each item unchecked.
  3. As the governor completes items, tick them off. Optional date column records when each was done.
  4. When all required items are complete, the row’s status can be marked complete.
  5. Status timeline: draft → in_progress → complete. Optionally cancelled if the governor steps down before finishing.

What it’s not

  • It’s not a workflow engine — it doesn’t send reminders or escalate. The clerk drives.
  • It’s not training certification — it tracks that the new governor should have completed items, not that they actually did to a verified standard. Combine with the skills matrix for self-rated competence.

Gotchas

  • Reference field is free-text. Use a consistent format — IND-2026-014 — so you can sort sensibly.
  • If a governor resigns mid-induction, set status to cancelled rather than delete the row. The trust audit log expects to see incomplete inductions for governance review.
  • The pack length is heavy — for refresher inductions (returning governors), most trusts use a shorter version. You can over-ride the default list.
